The last two years, I’ve participated in a fun poster show held by the Des Moines Film Society. The show is called “Lost Films,” and it’s an homage to all the movies that didn’t get made: ones that stayed an idea, ones that had a script but languished in development hell, ones that were shot but never released. This year, I chose Indiana Jones and the Monkey King as my lost film. For those not in the know, Monkey King was to be the sequel to The Last Crusade. George Lucas wanted a more supernatural bent to it, and Steven Spielberg wanted nothing to do with that, so Chris Columbus was brought in to write the script. His resulting vision is…a disaster, to put it gently. If you feel that your life would benefit from more gorillas in Nazi uniforms, water-skiing paleontologists, magic peaches, escape rhinos, and ancient Chinese cities in Africa (yes, really), find the script and give it a read. Better yet, listen to the radio drama of it made by my friends at Alcohollywood.
P.S. These posters were printed in an extremely limited edition of 20 by The Side Garage, who did an awesome job. Look at that gold!
