80/35 is a music festival that happens in Des Moines every July. This year, for its tenth anniversary, they held a show called Mixmasters. The brief was to choose any act from the last 10 years of the festival and create a gig poster for that act. I chose the Avett Brothers, who I’ve liked for years (and met once, in 2010!). Here’s the explanation I gave for the show:
I spent some time thinking about the 2012 theme “Sounds Like a Party,” and had the image in my mind of a bunch of little kids being picked up from a birthday party, tired and happy, by their mother (we’ll just pretend that all four of the Avetts are actual brothers, rather than just two of them). And since the Avetts are from the South, growing up near the heart of Appalachia, I chose to represent this posse of partiers and their patient parent using nature’s minivan: the Virginia opossum. I also wanted to show some love to an animal I feel has been unfairly maligned, and I like to think the Avett Brothers would approve of embracing an unloved and misunderstood soul.
This limited run of 15 was printed by 8|7 Central, whose color skills are pretty incredible. I wish you could see how the pink pops off the paper.
